If you don’t have a story in your pitch deck, you won’t get investment! Here is why:

A pitch deck presentation without a story is like a movie without any romance or purpose. When you are pitching to an investor a 3-minute pitch deck or even an elevator pitch, you want to hook up your product, leave some trace in their mind, you want to them to understand what your motivations were, your dreams, what was the AHA! moment in your journey.

A story should be clean, short, 2–3 sentences, 20–25 seconds long. It can be a question to the audience, it can be an emotional moment in your life, anything that will leave an impact on the investor/audience.

A story should always continue with the problem slide, it should always have a co-relation, continuity with the problems in the market.

So, what are the mistakes founders do here?
a- Most presentations I reviewed and startups I’ve mentored don’t have a story slide.
b- Their story is extremely long and meaningless.
c- The story does not have any relationship with the market problems
d- The story does not have any emotional effect.

How should I design my story slide?
That is very simple. Keep it clean. No text. A single photo representing your motivation is more than enough. Don’t add any text at all other than a title.

How should I present my story in an elevator pitch?
The same rules apply. You will be starting with your introduction, who you are, and jump straight to your story which shouldn’t be more than 10 seconds on an elevator pitch deck.

In conclusion, every startup founder needs to put a soul in their pitch deck, their motivation which investors would love to hear and mesmerize. You are all familiar with the phrase “investors invest in people, not startups.” Which is true. So, remember to create a killer story slide!
